Machine Shop

We have two full-time machinists, both highly skilled and experienced. They are here to help students working in the student shop on class projects and are the ones completing work orders to perfection for research. 

  • No walk-ins will be seen. For job consultations please request an appointment at me-machine-shop@utexas.edu. 
  • Faculty/research groups with funded research projects will be charged for consultations.
  • Office hours are available on Tuesdays from 10AM to 12 PM in the Student Machine Shop, ETC 1.210C.
  • Shop rates are $51/hr flat rate. No rush services available.

Work Orders

How to Request an Order
Before submitting an work order, please email me-machine-shop@utexas.edu to discuss the job you have planned and material selection. We will send you the work order form.
All requests must be submitted electronically.

Safety Certification

Want to become machine shop certified? At our trainings, you will be taught the ins and outs of machine safety and general use of mills and lathes. You will get the chance to use these machines first-hand!

Required Before Certification:

  • OH500 – Machine Shop Safety Training (EID required) –  OH500 Link
    • The objective for this course is to introduce employees and students to the hazards of working in machine shops.
    • Employees and students are advised that this is general shop safety. Additional site specific training may be required to qualify for working in your shop.
    • Machine Shop Safety Training (PDF)
  • Hard copy of OH500 completion.
    • You must provide the Machine Shop a hard copy of TXClass Personal Training History that contains the OH500 – TXClass
  • Sign up for only one class session
    • Dates and times will be provided by Jamie Svrcek
    • If you need to cancel, please do so at least 24 hours in advance by emailing Jamie Svrcek at me-machine-shop@utexas.edu 
Required Day of Certification:

Failure to attend without prior notification will be subject to grade deduction (for class requirement).

  • Duration of class is approximately 4hrs.
  • Must arrive 15 minutes before class begins.
  • Must wear Long Pants
  • Must wear Closed Toed Shoes
  • Properly secure Long Hair
  • Properly secure/remove loose clothing, jewelry, and/or lanyards.

You will be provided with the adequate safety equipment (safety glasses, ear protection…if needed, etc.). Upon completion you will receive a Certification Card which will enable you to use the student machine shop for the duration of your studies at the University of Texas at Austin in the Mechanical Engineering Department.
