Set-Based, Multiscale Design Exploration

Description: 
Multilevel design spans physical scales and disciplines, with interacting variables and underlying phenomena that span from systems to components to material levels. We are establishing a set-based method for collaborative, decentralized design exploration of these multilevel systems. The method facilitates distribution of design activities while reducing iteration among designers and achieving satisfactory system-level solutions. As part of the method, designers communicate across levels and disciplines via approximate models and design space mappings that represent sets of satisfactory design solutions. The set-based approach builds upon foundations in multiobjective decision support, robust design, statistical methods, and hierarchical systems.
